The Apple iPad: Just Hype? Or a Glimpse into the Future?

April 6th, 2010

Technology, Usability

Ok, I admit it I bought into the hype and I preordered an iPad on March the 12th, with a guarantee it would arrive on Saturday the 3rd of April.  I patiently waited Saturday morning for the UPS truck to arrive.  It arrived and my first impression, I was surprised by its small size.  Upon closer inspection I promptly noticed it is another in a long line of beautifully designed Apple products, thanks Dieter Rams.

Now after a few days I have to say I am very impressed by the iPad, its ease of use, and most notably how quickly I adapted to the touch screen interface to navigate and use the various apps I downloaded.  I am now of the opinion that the iPad represents the first evolutionary step towards where I believe personal computing is headed; Walter Mossberg was one of the first to say it.

Lastly, a friend of mine and I were discussing the future of personal computing and the iPad and he summed it up perfectly, “Ted the best part is when people ask, what are you going to do with it? My response:  I’m not sure yet.  I just have to wait until the right combination of apps is out there and I can do anything with it.  As of now, I can surf the web, read books, get recipes, read the news, watch TV, remote desktop into my work computer, do spreadsheets, write documents, check email, watch a movie, listen to music, and play games…”

And the list will just grow.
